One of the things that the internet has brought about is a common environment where intelligent people come into contact with stupid people. Take 'you tube' or another website where you can leave comments. Anyone can leave comments or read other people's comments. Stupid people can write their inarticulate ramblings just as easily as intelligent people can write their astute insights. The problem is the frustration this creates. At my job I work with mainly intelligent people. I socialise almost entirely with intelligent people. I read books by intelligent people and watch movies written and directed by intelligent people (mainly). Mostly in my every day life I don't come into contact with too many stupid people. But, if I visit a website by David Attenborough or watch a speech on you tube by Carl Sagan or Richard Dawkins I can't help but notice hundreds, sometimes thousands of comments failing again and again to make useful or even remotely intelligent points. It's disheartening and frightening to think that there are grown adults out there who refuse to accept evolution because their 'children didn't evolve into something' or that can't understand why everyone in Australia doesn't fall off the bottom of the world. These people can vote. These people have a say in what we can teach our children in schools. These people are trusted to bring up children of their own. It's a bloody frightening prospect. |
